In a little hiking base-town in northern Peru, where you stay a week to acclimate before heading into the Andes, we got a real hankering for pizza. The place was slow, we waited more than an hour, so I had plenty of time to study everything on the table, the wine and the shakers in the warm glowing light. I wanted a loose feel for it: a memory of being hungry, happy, and far from home.
