This is the caldera of a supervolcano in Guatemala, where the lake sits in the crater rimmed by full-sized active volcanoes. Jay and I reached the town of San José on the night of its patron saint's festival, and around two in the morning a huge boom shook the hotel. I hugged Jay sure a volcano was erupting, but they were fireworks called God Wakers, set off to wake the gods of the volcanoes. We survived the night, and I got to painting the next morning.
